Forestview Church Branding
As director of the Creative Team at Forestview Church for 2 years I have had the opportunity to not only create many different graphics for the church, but I have also been responsible for creating the Forestview Church branding guide and ensure that all designers, photographers and videographers follow the rules and guidelines in this guide.
Step 1: Collecting User Requirements
The Forestview branding guide seems to never be complete. There are always new areas where we are creating that need new rules and guidelines so the process is never-ending. Nevertheless, there is a process I try to follow when I add a section to the guide. First, I elicit feedback from church staff and Creative Team members to decide what the actual rules should be for this section. Questions like: "How do we define what we would call a 'good' design for this situation and a 'bad' design for this situation?". This determines the requirements for this section. The rules can be written out or graphic like in the ones below where we create rules for where content should go in a new sermon series graphic.
Step 2: Testing
Next, I would set myself as the person on the next project of that type. I would treat this as a sort of Usability Test where I am the user and I am testing how straight forward the rules in the branding guide are. In this example with the sermon graphics, I then made all the graphics for that next sermon series and tried following the rules and guidelines I had just created. If there were any issues I would iterate on the rules and guidelines until they were exactly how they needed to be.
Finally, I would complete this section in the Forestview Church brand guide and send the updated version to the Creative Team so they will have the new rules and guidelines to help them make the best designs possible.
